The champagne tower (シャンパンタワー / shanpan tawā) is the ultimate status symbol at host clubs. When a customer orders one, the entire club stops to watch. But between the spectacle and the stories, it can be hard to separate fact from fantasy — especially regarding cost and etiquette.

What Is a Champagne Tower?

A champagne tower is exactly what it sounds like: multiple glasses of champagne stacked in a pyramid formation — typically on a cart wheeled to your table. The host will pour champagne from the top glass, filling the entire tower from the top down. The club dims the lights, music changes, and all hosts gather to cheer.

Champagne towers are not about drinking (much of the champagne goes to waste or is consumed by hosts). They are about spectacle and support — a visual demonstration of your support for a host.

Tier Sizes and Costs

Champagne towers come in various sizes, and the cost scales dramatically with each tier.

Important: Prices vary significantly by club. Some clubs offer smaller, more affordable towers starting at ¥50,000. The champagne used also affects the price — Moët towers are cheaper than Dom Pérignon or Armand de Brignac towers.

How to Order a Champagne Tower

1. Talk to your host first. Tell them you are interested in ordering a champagne tower. Do not feel pressured — this is a normal conversation.
2. Ask for the price menu. A legitimate club will show you the tower menu with clear prices. If they avoid showing prices, do not order.
3. Choose your tier and champagne type. Moët towers are standard. Dom Pérignon or Krug towers are premium.
4. Confirm the total cost including tax/service charge. Remember the ~35% surcharge. A ¥200,000 tower costs about ¥270,000 after all charges.
5. Prepare to be the center of attention. Once ordered, the club will announce your name, the host's name, and the tower size. All hosts will gather to cheer.

What Happens During a Tower Presentation

When you order a tower, the club transforms. Here is what typically happens:

• The lights dim and spotlights focus on your table
• A cart with the tower is wheeled to your table — sometimes with lights or LED accents
• The DJ announces: "本日は〇〇様より、××くんにシャンパンタワーをいただきました！" (Today, from Customer Name to Host Name, a champagne tower!)
• All available hosts gather around your table, clapping and chanting
• Your host pours champagne from the top glass, letting it cascade down the tower
• Hosts cheer, clap, and take photos. The tower stays at your table for the rest of the night as a centerpiece
• You may be handed a "hime mic" to say a few words

Etiquette Tips

• Don't feel obligated to drink it all. Most of the champagne is consumed by hosts. You are paying for the spectacle, not the liquid.
• Share the moment. The hosts will offer glasses to nearby customers too. This is part of the community atmosphere.
• Take photos and videos. Most clubs welcome it. Your host will happily pose with the tower.
• Tip isn't required. Tipping is not customary in Japan. The tower cost covers everything.
• Do not order a tower you cannot afford. Sounds obvious, but the excitement can lead to decisions you regret. Confirm the total price twice.

Is It Worth the Cost?

This depends entirely on what you value. A champagne tower is not a good value proposition if you are thinking about cost per glass of champagne. You are paying for:

• A dramatic, memorable experience
• Massive support for your host's ranking
• Status and recognition within the club
• An unforgettable night that you and your host will talk about
